And if you're like, 'well... NO, what does that look like?!?', then I GOT YOU BOO.
Because yes, you can workout and move in ways that feel good, and NO, it doesn't have to be about slimming, burning, toning or shaping.
Check out this post I made on IG (save & share if you feel compelled!) but here is the gist!
-------------------------------------
Here are 7 ways to implement a moving practice into your life (separate from diet culture)
1. Shift your focus from the external to the internal
Often our metrics are external (heart rate, body fat %, pant size, weight). Shift your focus to other metrics you can FEEL like how much energy you have, how empowered your feel, how much easier daily tasks are your mood, etc.
2. Make movement part of your daily life
Not all movement has to be 'exercise". Don't discount taking the stairs, walking the dog, cleaning the apt, or dancing in your living room. See if you can make movement a part of your daily life.
3. Make movement fun!
When movement is fun, shocker... you'll be more inclined to do it! So not only explore physical activities you find fun (a sport, a dance class, riding your bike), but you can also find ways to make movement more fun! Listening to your fav music on your walk, reading a great book on the stationary bike at the gym, or joining a sports team or attending a workout class with a friend are all ways to make movement more pleasurable.
4. Make movement a priority
Just like other health-promoting behaviors, like making time to brush your teeth or eat, see if you can make moving a priority, and schedule it in.
Do you have the most time / energy in the AMs, afternoons or evenings? Can you make it a negotiable appointment with yourself?
5. Get comfy
It's going to be hard to enjoy moving if you feel uncomfy doing it.
Trade that oversized sweatshirt you're overheating in for a cool, loose t-shirt and stretchy pants. Make sure what you're wearing is something you feel good in and something you can move easily in.
6. Think about stretching & strength training
All movement is good movement, but we know that stretching & strength training are particularly supportive for your body. Strength Training because it helps build stronger bones and muscles, and stretching for more flexible tendons and reduced injury. It also just feels SO GOOD.
7. This is a biggie - stop tracking.
If you're using metrics like heart rate, your weight or the calories your Apple Watch says you burned, it will continue to be deeply entrenched in, you guessed it...
DIET CULTURE.
